W7MOT Gateway is Down

The W7MOT Gateway server is currently OFF as of approximately 8:00 am Wednesday 20 January 2010.

I apologize for this late announcement but I was out of town at the time of this failure. The nature of the failure must have caused an immediate (verses a smooth controlled) shutdown of the server. Linux servers do not like power removed unexpectedly.

"All things equal", when there is a power failure on White Tanks site, our system will make a voice announcement "There is a Power Failure, notify the Administrator". This announcement will repeat every 15 minutes until the UPS smoothly shuts down the gateway server OR Power is restored, in which case there is an announcement "Power is resorted" (only done once).

My remote analysis today does not show any "problem" notices from the gateway server of any kind. There was a power failure of some duration on White Tanks as reported by all the other equipment logs; duration unknown. The UPS is not reporting because it only talks to the server, but it is working and powering all the other equipment.

Thank You Justin, w9fyi for notifying me that something wasn't working right.

Reminder to all; if you notice something not working on W7MOT or any of the dstar repeaters in the valley, Please notify one of the admins or contacts by email or phone.

Status of the site is:

  • All repeaters are working.
  • The Gateway Server is down
  • RF Internet link is working
  • LAN components are working
  • Other misc components are working

What this means in terms of a DStar repeater site:

What works:

  • You can use all repeaters in local mode
  • Site ID and calling ID when keying
  • Repeaters may be cross banded
  • You may use all other DStar sites with all priviledges
  • (you do not have to re-register on any other dstar systems; the US Trust Directory has all your registration informaation and continues to pass it to other DStar sites; so your radios and Dongles will work on other sites)

What doesn't work:

  • No Gateway related services
  • NO "local W7MOT" DONGLE Connectivity
  • dstarusers.org is not updated
  • the site dashboard is not working
  • new registrations not working
  • changes to dstar accounts not working

Cause of the this outage is unknown. Attempts to remotely reboot by power cycling the server's two AC power inputs was unsuccessful.

A site visit is required to assess the nature and extent of the failure and resolution. Because the server did a "hard" OFF and does not respond to the remote power commands, either the server is "not" auto starting and needs a manual ON button press; OR the server is running but not fully booting to a point where it will respond.
